Oh Sweet, They Remade 1996! Wait, What Even Is This?

Okay, wow, I just stumbled on this "1996 Remake" and if you're like me and just want some simple, dumb fun maybe with a friend sitting next to you, this is a great pick. You don't need to "get" it. The goal is just to figure out what this thing even is as fast as possible, and have a laugh doing it.

Here's a way more interesting goal than just clicking: try to imitate a real sound. Like, can you make something that sounds like wind? Or creaky footsteps? The sounds in here are... chunky. Digital. It's gonna be a terrible impression, and that's the fun part. If a fax machine and a dial-up modem had a baby, this would be its cries. That's the aesthetic you're working with.

Compared to the super old, janky original versions? This remake is probably smoother. Fewer glitches. But it still has that classic feel. Like the musical equivalent of "test pattern" on old TVs. This is the soundtrack to refreshing a page over and over. But in a fun way!

Play it with a friend. Take turns adding one sound. See who can make the other person laugh first with a badly imitated "rainstorm" or "car engine." The sounds are layered weird. Sometimes they cancel each other out, which just adds to the comedy. The UI uses at least 3 different fonts. Graphic design is my passion, clearly.

If you get curious about other weird offshoots, the community has whole series based on characters. There's the whole Sprunki Retake universe, and the bizarre Parasprunki mod. This remake is tamer than those, for sure.

Is there an active Discord? Yeah, and they argue about which Phase is "canon." It's all fake, people. When was this remake released? No clue. Recently, probably. It showed up in my recommendations.

Seriously, don't overthink it. Grab a friend, pick some icons, and try to make the worst impression of a cat meowing you possibly can. That's the real game.
