ADOFAI Level Editor v1
Building Your Own Geometric Nightmare: The OG Editor
So there I was, thinking I knew rhythm games. Played everything from osu! to Stepmania, thought I had the single-key thing figured out. Then I found this Level Editor v1 during what felt like a community level release party online—everyone trying new stuff, sharing creations, that whole vibe.
Let me tell you, creating levels is a whole different beast from playing them. This editor... it's like someone gave you the keys to the torture chamber and said "have fun designing new ways to suffer."
The real kicker? This isn't just about making hard levels. I wanted to actually improve my real-world music skills, you know? Like, understand rhythm better. But the editor makes you realize something: ADOFAI isn't about winning. It's about surviving long enough to call yourself a player. And when you're the one building the deathtrap, you see the whole thing differently.
My spacebar has never felt so... heavy. Like, every time I place a tile, I'm creating future frustration for someone. That button becomes the most stressful thing on the keyboard—both when playing AND when creating.
Watching someone playtest your level and struggle on a part you thought was obvious? Humble doesn't even begin to cover it. You start thinking "oh this is easy!" and then you watch three people fail the same spot and realize... oops.
The community is just a support group, honestly. We're all here willingly submitting ourselves to geometric punishment, then turning around and designing MORE punishment for each other. It's beautiful and messed up.
Writing about this feels like poetry sometimes. The emotional journey from "this will be fun to make" to "why did I think this was a good idea" to "oh wait this actually feels cool" is... something else. Each level tells a story, and the editor lets you be the author of someone else's pain.
Questions that popped up while messing with the editor:
1) What audio formats work best for custom songs? MP3 vs WAV and all that?
2) How active IS the ADOFAI community compared to other rhythm games?
3) How do I add custom music to my level properly?
4) What's the best way to manage frustration while creating?
The progress bar slowly depleting isn't called a "health bar" in this game. It's your will to live, draining in real time. And when you're the one setting up that drain? Yeah.
The planets just follow the path. YOU have to know when to press. And when you're building the path... you control everything. It's power. Dangerous, rhythmically-precise power.
Try the editor. Make something terrible. Watch someone struggle. Feel the weird creator-guilt. Repeat. It's a cycle.
