ADOFAI world 1-5
World 1-5: Where Speedrunners Go to Find... Vibes?
So I'm at this coffee shop, right? Super noisy. People chatting, espresso machine hissing, general chaos. But I've got my headphones on, trying to focus on ADOFAI World 1-5. Early official level, should be simple. But I'm a speedrunner at heart - always looking for optimal routes, faster times, record potential.
Except today I'm not actually speedrunning. Weirdly, I'm just... exploring. Looking for levels that match my aesthetic taste. Which feels wrong for a speedrunner, but here we are. Explorer mindset activated: charting the familiar territory of early game like it's some massive unknown collab level.
Comparison time: Other games have health bars. You make mistakes, your health goes down, you might still survive. ADOFAI? Nah. ADOFAI has your "will to live". And it depletes in real time. Every failure chips away at your soul. Dramatic? Maybe. Accurate? Definitely.
The learning curve in this game isn't even a curve. It's like... a cliff. You climb the tutorial, think "okay I got this", then WHAM - impossible wall. Then there's this plateau of suffering where you make no progress for days. Then another cliff. Repeat until you either quit or achieve enlightenment.
No story in this game. None. Zero narrative. But you create your own anyway. The hero's journey of beating World 1-5 becomes this epic tale in your head. Struggle, failure, tiny victories, eventual triumph. You're both the protagonist and the narrator.
And "getting good"? Doesn't feel like improvement. Feels like Stockholm Syndrome. Like, you start to identify with your captor. The game beats you down so much that you start thinking "maybe the game is right, maybe I should suffer". Then you come back for more. It's messed up.
Explorer questions: What actually MAKES ADOFAI unique? Like, beyond the one button thing. There are other rhythm games. What's the special sauce here? And are there psychological BENEFITS to this torture? Like, does it actually help with something? Also how does the audio work when you play at different speeds? Does it pitch shift or just... get faster?
World 1-5 is... basic. Fundamental. Early game stuff. But playing it as a speedrunner looking for aesthetics in a noisy coffee shop? Changes the experience. You notice the simple geometry differently. Appreciate the clean lines. Wonder why you're doing this to yourself.
Coffee's cold. Time to go.
