ADOFAI WIP 1.0
ADOFAI WIP 1.0: The Beautiful Mess of Unfinished Suffering
As someone who actively seeks out the hardest possible content in rhythm games (yes i have problems), ADOFAI WIP 1.0 called to me like a siren song of potential agony. A work-in-progress level? Unpolished? Probably unbalanced? SIGN ME UP.
I've been grinding one specific section for like... an hour? Maybe more? Time gets weird when you're in focused practice mode. Just me, my keyboard, and this one stupid pattern that the creator clearly hasn't balanced yet.
The "WIP" in the title isn't just for show. This level feels RAW. Some sections are stupidly easy, like "did they forget to add notes here?" easy. Then BAM—wall of impossible patterns. No smooth difficulty curve here. Just cliffs.
"Frame-perfect strats exist for skipping milliseconds on speedrun-optimized levels." (Noise #452)
In WIP 1.0, i'm pretty sure some sections REQUIRE frame-perfect inputs because the timing windows feel... off? Like they're placeholders. Or maybe they're intentionally sadistic. Hard to tell with WIP stuff.
What's fascinating though is getting to see level design in its embryonic state. You can almost feel where the creator was like "ok this part works" and where they were like "eh i'll fix this later maybe." There's a section with inconsistent spin speeds that feels like a bug but might be intentional? Who knows!
"The 'checkpoint effect' on clear rates is significant—adding one checkpoint can double clear chances." (Noise #461)
WIP 1.0 has checkpoints in WEIRD places. Like, right before an easy section but NOT before the brutal part. It's like the creator put them where THEY kept failing during testing. Which is actually kinda cool—you're seeing their personal struggle points fossilized in the level.
My current goal is to reach what i'm calling "10-difficulty equivalent" skill. Whether WIP 1.0 IS actually 10-difficulty is debatable because some parts feel like 6 and others feel like 14. But averaging it out? Sure, let's call it 10.
"The average number of attempts before a player's first clear of a 12-difficulty map is in the thousands." (Noise #470)
I'm probably at attempt #300-something on WIP 1.0 and i haven't cleared it yet. But that's the point right? This isn't a finished, balanced product. This is a glimpse into the sausage-making factory of rhythm game creation. And the sausage is currently half-raw.
Random Practical Questions:
- What are the "crown" achievements and how do I get them? (B13) – No crowns in WIP levels usually but the achievement is surviving
- What is the difficulty jump between official and community levels? (G9) – WIP levels are like... community levels but with extra chaos
I'm genuinely fangirling over how transparent this WIP is. Like, you can TELL which parts the creator loves (polished, synced beautifully) and which parts they hate (clunky, unfair). It's a diary entry in level form.
The sync moments in WIP 1.0 are actually brilliant when they work. There's this one drop where the track does this rapid expansion thing RIGHT as the bass hits, and it's PERFECT. But then two seconds later there's a timing that feels completely arbitrary. It's whiplash in the best/worst way.
If you're the kind of player who enjoys seeing behind the curtain, or who wants to suffer through something genuinely unbalanced and experimental, WIP 1.0 is fascinating. It's not "good" in the traditional sense—it's a prototype. But there's beauty in that mess.
Also i think i found a bug? Or a feature? There's a tile that doesn't seem to register unless you hit it slightly early. Could be latency. Could be the level. Could be my keyboard dying from overuse. The mystery is part of the charm.
WIP 1.0 reminds me that even the most polished, beautiful ADOFAI levels started as janky experiments like this. We're playing someone's first draft. And there's something special about that, even when it's kicking your butt.
Will i ever clear it? Maybe. Will i keep trying? Definitely. Because that's what we do. We see an unfinished mountain and we decide to climb it anyway, knowing there might not even be a proper summit.
That's the ADOFAI spirit, right? Or maybe it's just masochism. Hard to tell sometimes.
