ADOFAI but better: When "Good Enough" Isn't Good Enough
So I'm between meetings, got like 15 minutes to kill. Normally I'd just check my phone or whatever, but today I'm like "let's see what this 'ADOFAI but better' thing is about". The name alone is kinda... bold. Like, "hey the original game is cool but THIS is better". Confidence.
As someone who's worked on multi-creator projects (yeah, I've collabed on a few levels, no big deal), I'm always curious about what people think "better" means in this context. Is it harder? Prettier? More musical? Just... different?
Really I'm just looking for levels that match my taste, you know? My aesthetic. Not necessarily the hardest thing ever, just stuff that feels... right. That resonates.
Let me share some wisdom here, if I may. This game... it asks you a question. "Can you become an instrument?" Can you internalize the rhythm so completely that you're not just pressing buttons, you're playing? And then, of course, it makes that incredibly difficult. Because of course it does.
There's always this tension, right? Between appreciating the art and actually performing it. Like, you can watch a track and think "wow that's beautiful" and then you play it and... oh. Oh it's actually trying to kill you. The beauty is a trap. A beautiful, geometric trap.
But that's the thing about mastering any complex skill. It's repetitive, it's frustrating, it's... rewarding. Eventually. The game just externalizes that struggle. Makes it visible. Literally.
And you know what's magical? When a track stops feeling like an enemy. When it starts feeling like... a partner. Like you're dancing together instead of fighting. That's when you know you've truly learned it.
Honestly, this community isn't just playing a game. We're participating in something. A living, evolving art form. Each level is someone's expression. Each clear is someone's interpretation.
So while I'm here procrastinating... what are the future possibilities for community creations anyway? Like, where can this go? And what's actually stopping people? What are the real limits for custom levels? Also, how do you even install mods safely without breaking everything? And does sleep actually affect performance? Like, if I pull an all-nighter, am I just gonna suck tomorrow?
"ADOFAI but better" is... well, it's a statement. Whether it lives up to the name is up to you. But for a 15-minute break hunt for something that matches your vibe? Not bad. Not bad at all.
Back to work I guess. Or... one more level?
